Statics

An engine needs its electricity just like a Formula Student team needs its statics. Whether you are a freshman or about to finish your studies, this is the right module for you! The statics deal with the economic planning, implementation and control of the vehicle. We deal with topics such as the manufacturing costs of our car and the commercial marketing of it. The module is divided into two topics, the business plan and the cost report. Business Plan Within merely a year, you and your team will set up a fictitious company that will take on the commercial marketing of our racing car. There are no limits to your creativity, from the concept phase to finding a name to the final presentation. At the end of the year, you and your team members will present your company to international juries at events throughout Europe. Cost Report With the Cost Report we prove that we are familiar with the manufacturing processes and costs associated with the production of our race car. For example, we look at the trade-offs and make-or-buy decisions of different components and look at the differences between prototype and mass production using our cars as an example. Your skills:

Electric Drive

The energy supply – In the area of the electric drive train we are responsible for the accumulator of our racing car and ensure that it does not run out of energy during the race. The accumulator is redesigned every year and adapted to the new requirements, both mechanically and electrically. It is monitored during operation by our Battery Management System, which we developed ourselves. We also take care of the inverter, which is fed directly from the battery and supplies our synchronous motors with the necessary alternating voltage. Your skills:

Powertrain

The department takes care of turning the high-tech carbon soapbox into a real electric race car that accelerates to 100 km/h faster than you can probably read this sentence. This is accomplished by a completely self-developed electric wheel hub drive. This means, the electric motor and the planetary gearbox are located in the wheel carrier on each wheel. Our racing car therefore has a 4-wheel drive. In addition to the drivetrain, the Powertrain department also takes care of the cooling of all highly stressed power components. Currently, the cooling of the 4 motors, inverters and the accumulator is achieved using water cooling, where the cooling water is circulated via pumps through the cooling jackets of the motors, the cooling plates for the power electronics and the radiator. Your skills:

  • Ability to work in a team and enjoy engineering tasks
  • Independent working style and familiarisation with new topics
  • Motivation and ambition
  • Basic knowledge of fluid mechanics

What we offer:

Chassis and Composites

The chassis of a racing car has a fundamental influence on its performance. Low weight and high stiffness have to be combined. Fibre-reinforced composites are ideally suited for this and are our material of choice. In addition to construction, simulation and design, we also focus on craftsmanship as we manufacture almost all of our parts ourselves. We mainly use fibres impregnated with resin, which are processed under pressure and temperature and in combination with honeycomb cores into very light and high-strength laminates. Our 13th carbon monocoque is the central component of the department. Almost all other assemblies of the vehicle are connected to it. In addition, together with the roll bars, the belt system and the crash structure at the front of the car, it is the driver’s safety cell. This also includes the firewall that separates the driver from the high-voltage components in the rear of the car. We manufacture these – such as the battery housing – from aramid fibres and a non-flammable resin matrix. Your skills:

  • Ability to work in a team and enjoyfinance tasks
  • Strong communication skills
  • Independent working style and familiarisation with new topics
  • Motivation and ambition
  • Basic knowledge of lightweight construction

  • Cooperation with students from business and technical courses of study in a friendly and well-coordinated team
  • Challenging tasks in your own area of responsibility
  • Taking responsibility in meaningful positions
  • Independent organisation of your working hours
  • Participation in Formula Student competitions throughout Europe
  • Opportunities to actively participate in production

Aerodynamics

The Aerodynamics department (Aero for short) develops and manufactures the wing package with the aim of pushing the vehicle more firmly on the ground and increasing our cornering speed even further. We are divided into three areas: simulation, component development and manufacturing. There is something for everyone. If you like calculations and virtual methods for fluid mechanical or structural design, simulation is the place for you. If you want to give your creativity and engineering spirit free rein, then component development would be something for you. Or if you are a doer and want to see results, then come to manufacturing and gain experience in carbon manufacturing and help us develop new manufacturing concepts. To build a coherent system, all our members have insight to the areas mentioned above. Your skills:

  • Ability to work in a team and enjoyfinance tasks
  • Strong communication skills
  • Independent working style and familiarisation with new topics
  • Motivation and ambition

What we offer:

  • Cooperation with students from business and technical courses of study in a friendly and well-coordinated team

  • Taking responsibility in meaningful positions
  • Independent organisation of your working hours
  • Participation in Formula Student competitions throughout Europe
  • Opportunities to actively participate in production

Suspension

The suspension is the link between the carbon monocoque and the wheel and is responsible for achieving as much traction as possible. This starts with choosing the best tyres for our car and ends with a complex decoupled suspension damper systems. In order to make good decisions, a good understanding of the entire vehicle is required, so that in the end a fast race car comes out. In this department, we look in detail at the wishbones, the spring-damper system, the steering and the pedals. In addition to the components, there are always other tasks concerning the suspension, such as overall vehicle simulations. Your skills:

  • Ability to work in a team and enjoy engineering tasks
  • Independent working style and familiarisation with new topics
  • Motivation and ambition
  • Basic knowledge of technical mechanics

What we offer:

  • Cooperation with students from business and technical courses of study in a friendly and well-coordinated team
  • Challenging tasks in your own area of responsibility
  • Taking responsibility in meaningful positions
  • Gaining practical experience in the areas of drive and cooling systems
  • Independent organisation of your working hours
  • Participation in Formula Student competitions throughout Europe
  • Opportunities to actively participate in production
